Preparedness Manual - Chapter 7 Overview - Preparing For The Unthinkable
This chapter was an integral part of a much older preparedness presentation. Just about every survival program in the world focuses on preparing for and surviving earthly calamities and a few focus on health related issues. This whole Overview of my Preparedness Course blankets just about all the known areas where humans can be harmed. For example, most survivalists won't even agree that if a grown family loses their entire wealth in an economic collapse, had failed to survive. People prepared to survive an economic collapse will make it through, perhaps not unscathed, but they will be a thousand times better than unprepared folk. This entire course is designed to help you and your family survive many complex issues that can dramatically effect your life in a very bad way - if you are not prepared. This chapter is very robust and will help you prepare to survive just about any earthly danger, such as physical harm.
I penned the original version of this preview several years ago. I tell you what, things are accelerating at an incredible rate. I really mean that, I can hardly keep up with the changes and daily developments. More than ever, I believe preparation will be essential if you want to survive and make it through, say the next ten years. That's an outside figure. I also believe that as in Katrina in 2005, very few, I mean a handful of people will be prepared in the first real go around of problems. BTW, I'm referring to problems, which will dwarf Katrina. As time goes on, more will wake up and start preparing. The downside to late starters is lack of resources. For example, suppose the first problem is a [NBC] nuclear, biological or chemical attack by terrorists, where air becomes poisonous. You can forget about buying a gas mask within hours of the attack. Sure you might find one at 4 or 5 times the worth of a quality mask. If you are successful in acquiring a quality mask and filter with shelf life still left, that is great for next time, but it is still not enough. You need more than a mask and filter. Reacting to an air born attack is very serious. You don't just grab any old mask and dawn it, thinking "ahhh I'm safe". Here is a key point. If you did not understand that last comment, then you would probably be a casualty if the air is bad in your location. If the contamination is strong, you either react properly with the proper gear and know-how or you will be a victim. It's that simple....
In every aspect of life whether it be sports, business or finance, those who prepare themselves invariably end up being better off than those who don't. This first subchapter I believe to be the most important. As on old and somewhat crazy bookkeeper of mine often said: "Ya gotta wanna!" Without a roaring fire in your belly you're not gonna make it. It's that simple.... In the Prelude I discussed Intention as presented by Dr. Wayne Dyer. My bookkeepers words were referencing Intention. Ya gotta wanna!!!! Do you?
This chapter, How to Prepare for the Unthinkable will offer immeasurable help in learning how to prepare. I the real world, ultimately the person responsible for preparing you, is YOU. Don't rely on anyone but yourself. Regarding proper preparation, don't rely on me, your neighbor or especially any governmental agency. When the crap hits the fan, you will be on your own. Either you are prepared and do the right thing or you don't. Don't blame anyone but yourself. Although this book and especially this chapter will go a very long way to help you, you ought to seek other resources as well. Don't come back to me and say: "Hey you did not cover such and such adequately and therefor it's your fault". Bullshit! Do your "due diligence" and get prepared.
Maintaining Your Emotional Stability
If even a small portion of the turmoil written about in this publication comes to pass, each of us will need more strength and emotional centeredness than we ever thought we could muster. For example, suppose the economic woes written about in chapter 1, do come to pass, as I believe they will? Millions of people will lose everything. In the beginning of one month, all may be well, a mere six months later, it may be too late to react, the die may have been cast. The banking and finance system world wide may have collapsed. If so, all will be lost. Who knows what and in what order, things will occur. All I really know in my heart is, things are coming. I certainly don't profess to know. I have worked all my life extremely hard to acquire what modest means I have. The thought of losing it all is so alien to me, my mind just cannot even grasp the impact. What an awful shame for anyone to lose it all, or a major portion for that matter. Many will, because they will not be prepared. They will not have the emotional centeredness to grasp what is happening. They will be paralyzed, unable to make their way safely through the crossroads. My friend, millions and millions of Americans are so intoxicated with the good life, they cannot even imagine it ending. Those unfortunate folks will be in dire trouble. Will you be one of them? You need not be.
What ever you do, place a lot of Intention on your emotional welfare. Without a stable, centered emotional state, the Crossroads will be even more hazardous. Meditation works very well for many. Learn how.
If you are a Christian or believer in God in a different faith, now is the time to learn to pray and do so often. BTW, much research of late, supports prior conjecture, that prayer does work. Some personal thoughts. I talk to my God a lot, but I ask little. Not sure why. I really believe he is looking after me. Not sure why. I often feel that some unseen thingy has just caused me to do or see or hear, in order that something small but good happens. Not sure why. Never wrote like this before. Not sure why. Maybe fear has a way of capturing our attention from time to time. Maybe that's why.
If your Intent is to be safe and to endure sudden crisis, then emotionally you need to feel secure and in charge during a sudden crisis. This subchapter on emotional stability will give you insight and suggestions on how to remain centered and calm during the scenarios discussed in the first six chapters.
"Micro" Short Term Plan
Imagine it is 3 O'clock in the afternoon. You are at work and suddenly there is a commotion in a nearby office. You poke your head in, as fear begins to grip you. An announcer is saying on a radio: "Authorities are asking for everyone to remain calm. Details of the attack will be made public as fast as they come in."
The first thing you think about is your family. Are they OK? What should I do? Everyone is sort of saying the same things to each other. A tall lanky sales person looking out the window says: "I guess I'm gonna find out if my emergency plan works." You think, "What emergency plan? What the hell is an emergency plan?"
This subchapter tells you all about emergency plans. Why every family should have one. How to go about creating a plan just for your family.
If your Intent is to be safe and to endure dangerous times, then you and your family will have a plan like this as a starter plan. This is a minimum plan, if you really intend to make it you will have a more elaborate plan.
"Micro" Short Term Emergency Checklist
Each plan referred to in the last subchapter includes a Short-Term emergency checklist of items you and your family may need over short term, from a few days to a few weeks. Beyond weeks, we need a long-term plan.
Suppose you and your family are required to evacuate the area in which you live. A short-term check list will help you prepare a short-term emergency survival kit (a bug-out kit). All you need to do is grab it and bug-out. Some people keep them in their trunk.
This subchapter will give you insight and suggestions on how to prepare for the various scenarios discussed in the first six chapters, as well as the recent addition of the Pandemic chapter. If your Intent is to be safe and to endure sudden threats, then you and your family will have a bug-out kit. To get started, here is a brief overview of an emergency checklist of items and actions you need to have in place. You will of course tailor your's to your family situation and needs.
"Macro" Long Term Preparedness
Suppose for a moment, your short-term plan worked like a Swiss watch. So did your short-term bug-out kit. Suppose further that the local attack of what ever nature abated and you were allowed to go home. Suppose while you were away from home, things happened elsewhere in the world, which negatively effected the US stock market to the extent trading had to be temporarily halted. As you are driving home, you hear on the radio that the stock exchanges would remain closed until such and such date. You think silently to yourself, as your family chats about how great it will be to get home. Your mind surveys the various economic impacts a long term closing of the stock market might create. "It's bad very bad", you think to yourself. Fear builds as you drive. You reach for your cell phone to call your brother. "All lines are busy, damn!"
If you think this simple scenario is off the edge, I hope you are right. The first six chapters of Crossroads presents a strong case for any number on converging crisis to merge into a whopper. Will you be ready with a long term plan?
If your Intent is to be safe and to endure sudden crisis, whether they be short or long term, then you and your family will a long-term plan as well as a short.
You Will Need To Avoid Hyper & Hypo Thermia With Proper Shelter, Clothing and Hydration
If you have toured the web looking at various sites such as this which offer various levels of survival and preparedness information, you probably did not see any how-to info regarding Hypo and Hyper Thermia. Yet, either could bring your survival attempt to a quick and ugly end. True wilderness survival specialists, will typically put stable body temperature either very high or the highest on the lists of gotta-does. Oh yes, water is very important, but unless your body temperature is stable all the water in the world won't help. Sooooo, we place body temperature number one on our gotta-does.
In a survival mode, the very first thing to do is to enhance conditions which will ensure that your body temperature will be stable: not too hot, not too cold. If you fail, your chances of survival are significantly reduced.
Hyperthermia
Hyperthermia is a result of the body being over heated due to physical activity, moderate to high ambient air temperature, the onset of dehydration caused by not replacing lost sweat with adequate water intake, solar or reflected radiation, improper clothing which does not allow for evaporation [cooling] of sweat, a low fitness level and or additional workload of carrying excessive backpack weight.
Hypothermia:
Hypothermia occurs when the temperature of your body falls to a level at which your vital organs can no longer function and begin to shut down. The condition can develop rapidly and is caused by cold, wet and or windy weather that chills the body at a speed faster than it can produce heat. Things such as a lack of survival food and proper clothing will heighten the speed at which hypothermia will affect you. Always remember to bring extra clothing appropriate to the season. Bring lite weight rain gear and when ever cool or cold weather is expected, as in approaching nightfall, make sure you stay dry. If you are in a party, pace yourself with the slowest person, or you might lose hours later on as you lend first aid to a person with a very unstable body temperature. Take frequent breaks and keep a close watch for members experiencing signs of fatigue. Exposure sickness generally occurs in temperatures of less than 50 degrees fahrenheit..
Our member side offers a lot more detail, but I need to mention in this short section. You must be able to rehydrate. That is why potable water is number two on our list. Chances are during a SHTF episode, you are going to be very physically active. You absolutely must have potable water or all else is a waste of time, other than body temp stability.
You Will Need Potable (drinkable) Water To Stay Alive
It is common knowledge within survival circles, that a person who is healthy and not thin as a bone can live easily for thirty [30] days without food. It won't be fun but they typically can make it. Water is another issue though. Depending on rate of loss of water from the body due to air temperature, energy exerted in moving such as running or walking, a person won't live much longer than ONE DAY with out water. In extremes he won't live a day. Did you notice the heading of this subchapter. It says "You WILL need", it does not say "You May need" Potable drinking water.
There are a few things we can't do without. Potable drinking water is one of the essentials. Depending on climate and time of year, the availability of potable water can become a life threatening emergency quickly. If you are in a situation whereby you are in critical need of potable water, chances are, lots of other folks are weathering the situation as well.
This subchapter talks extensively about the topic and will give you much insight as to how to prepare your bug-out or long-term kit, to ensure you will have potable water.
If your Intent is to have potable water during an emergency, then I'm sure you will read with great interest the subsection on potable drinking water.
You May Need Emergency Food Reserves To Keep From Starving
A few moments ago I spoke of potable drinking water being essential,m if your intent is to survive. Not very far behind water is food. Without adequate nutrition the process of surviving and staying healthy becomes questionable at the very least, and totally untenable in reality. I'm not talking just about you, but your whole family. The bigger the family the bigger the food requirement. It's a problem and ignoring it will not make it go away.
If your Intent is to stay healthy during a long term emergency [weeks not days], then you will have sufficient food reserves. To help you to learn all about food reserves, this subchapter will give you lot's of important information.
You May Need Emergency Lighting for nighttime activities
If you are like me and probably everyone else we know, when the sun goes down the lights come on. But what if the electricity stays off for a long period of time. I'm talking weeks or months. You can't rely on your portable generator, maybe you won't be able to get gas reliably.
Having an emergency plan in place, which deals with the issue of long term emergency lighting is a very good idea. Your neighbors are not going to want to give you any of their dwindling supply of candles or batteries. Perhaps, they will have a long term plan, with supplies on hand to get them through. Will You?
If your Intent is to have adequate lighting during a long term emergency, this subchapter is for you.
You May Need Emergency Heat To Keep From Freezing
Yikes, I really dislike the idea of being cold. Being hot is so so, but cold is a no no.
As I write these pages, the temperature outside is under 20 degrees fahrenheit and the wind is blowing like xxxx. Last night a cold front came through, and blew the back door of my house wide open for about five hours. I woke this morning to a very hot bedroom. I knew immediately, a door must be open down stairs. Yep!
Anyway, if you dislike cold as I do, then having a plan to have adequate heating during a prolonged emergency will be important to you. In that case, you better get to this subchapter quickly.
If your Intent is to have adequate heating during a long term emergency, this subchapter will show you how.
You May Need Emergency Communications To Receive Critical Updates From Various Sources
Not many people realize, if the electricity goes out for a long time, it won't take long for all their batteries to go dead. I don't know about you, but I like to have an idea on what's going on around the country during an emergency. I mean, I want to get updates often. I don't want to rely on third or fourth hand information either. Every time someone passes along info, they tend to massage it, by making it better or worse than what was given to them. In emergency conditions we need the most accurate updates we can get.
If your Intent is to keep yourself well informed during prolonged emergency situations, then this subchapter will help you do just that.
You May Need A Healthy Immune System To Ward Off Toxins And Pathogens
In recent years we have heard a lot about what is meant by being healthy. The topic is generally couched in discussion about issues such as the flu, or influenza. Today, late in 05, the media is in a frenzy with H5N1 the Bird Flu. Since I review nearly 100 information websites daily, I can tell you, behind the scenes there is much discussion going on about a coming pandemic. A large portion of what you are being told is as usual media and government noise. Although this ebook does not include a chapter regarding a pandemic etc., I have added a section on the right side of the home page with link to credible articles.
Regarding global issues we have a number that are interrelated. First, there is a high risk for one of the bird viruses mutating into a form, in which it will cross over into humans. That prospect is very dangerous for creating the dreaded world wide pandemic, medical researchers talk about quietly behind the scenes.
Regarding terrorism the issue of a biological or chemical terrorist attack is of prime importance.
In any long term emergency, whether it be a serious interruption of crude oil, or some sort of a natural disaster, the issue of being able to withstand the downside of the problem as related to ones health is of constant concern. Simply put, those individuals with strong healthy immune systems stand a far greater chance for surviving than those who don't. Viruses seek out poor immune systems, regardless of the age of the person.
In this subchapter we delve into the immune system issue, providing readers with a clear understanding of it's importance. Readers also learn a number of strategies, to help them maintain an ongoing strong immune system. We also present emergency measures to boost an immune response over the short term, in order to get through a potential medical and or health related crisis, such as a raging pandemic all around you. Don't wait until it happens, it's too late then.
If your Intent is to keep yourself healthy in order to live longer, that's great. You no doubt have a strong immune system already. If you have been wanting to get started improving your health and immune system, this is a good time to create an Intent to do so. Intent will cause you to do the things necessary to improve your health and immune system in order to withstand a medical emergency. These are the occasions in which your immune system will be stressed to it's limits. You need to read this chapter!
You May Need To Survive Outdoors In Severe And Hostile Conditions
Ok, this is the section I really struggle with. Most folks seem to think it's a bit far-fetched. But folks, we really do need to examine the prospect of being forced to live outside for a period of time. Look at the news from around the world. It happens all the time. Right this very minute as I write in December 2005, thousands are living outside in the middle of a highlands winter in earthquake savaged Pakistan. The destruction there was nearly total. Unless you are prepared to care for your family, while living outside, for an indefinite period and in what ever conditions might prevail, you may someday wish you had more foresight. Ooooh, it can't happen here.... wanna bet?
If you examine the previews to this publication, you will come away understanding that there are a number of festering issues, which can become very unpleasant. You ought to at the very least, prepare a semblance of a wilderness survival kit.
If your Intent is to keep yourself and your family safe in the worst case scenario, and in all climates and weather conditions, then this subchapter ought to help you a lot.
You May Need To Survive A Biochemical Or Nuclear Attack
The age of biological & chemical warfare started many years ago, going back to the middle ages and perhaps further. Today though, whole cities, towns and villages can be exterminated in a very short period of time. Although biological vs. chemical agents are used in a similar manner, they are quite different.
Bio-weapons "biological weapons" are living organisms. Bio-weapons are designed to attack specific targets, such as humans. They are most effective when used covertly. That is, they are introduced without their target knowing. They do their initial damage before symptoms occur. Frequently, as in the case of inhaled Anthrax, by the time overt symptoms occur; it is too last for effective treatment. Biological weapons require an incubation period, where symptoms often do not occur for days after the initial attack.
Chemical weapons are not living organisms. They are prepared and introduced to the enemy in the form of gas, dust or liquid. Typically, they are "broad-band agents". Broad Band Agents kill every living thing. Some can be altered to kill specific targets such as humans only. Chemical weapons act very quickly and can kill and or disable the target in minutes. They are more apt to be used in a battlefield setting, rather than against a local population as in a terrorist setting.
Nuclear weapons create several potentially deadly issues:
Contrary to common beliefs, surviving a nuclear attack is a very real probability. There are a number of things you can do to increase your chances of survival and with your health intact. Before we get to the survival strategies, let's examine the basic types of a nuclear events.
Dirty Bombs are standard explosive devises [bombs], in which radioactive compounds are attached to and around the explosive devise. When the explosive devise [bomb] detonates, it throws lot's of radioactive debris throughout the local area. Consequently the local area can maintain a harmful level of radiation for a very long time, rendering the area uninhabitable.
Suitcase Nukes are small nuclear explosives that can destroy a small town, create local yet very heavy damage to large cities. Much depends on the explosive capacity [yield] of the bomb in question. Destruction and major loss of life along with radioactivity lingering in a local area are the primary immediate types of physical harm.
Large Nuclear Bombs can render a medium sized city a total loss to a large city totally destroyed. Damage is typically in direct proportion to the strength of the explosive yield. WWII devises leveled with ease medium sized cities and are considered small by contemporary standards.
EMP Induced Nuclear Bombs [EMP = electro magnetic Pulse] can range from very small to very large explosive yields. Structurally they are the same as any other nuclear bomb. The difference is they are detonated high in the atmosphere over a target region or near a target region. The objective is to render the target region electronically and electrically dead. If efficiently executed massive loss of electrical infrastructure and any associated electronic components attached to the grid or standing alone, would be at grave risk of total destruction. An entire nation [US} could be rendered in defensible by such an attack. In actuality, the area would in seconds regress 200 years into the past in terms of technology. Horse and carriage would be king once again or at least for a significant period of months or years before infrastructure could be rebuilt. By then the nation would have been conquered and would have a new name.
Ok, let's take a look at a few things we can do to improve the odds of not only surviving, but thriving after a nuclear attack.
Ground Zero Of A Nuclear Blast
If you are at ground zero - very close to the impact zone and you have no warning, well the game would probably be over for you. Even if you lived through the initial blast, the aftermath would be very ugly.
Nuclear Shelters can be truly life saving during the period immediately following an event. The Internet is loaded with nuclear shelter info, ranging from actual bomb hardened shelters designed to survive a near hit, to what is referred to a Fallout Shelter. Just about everyone can afford some form of a fallout shelter. It's basic function is to protect the occupants of the shelter from the harmful radiation which is falling from the sky all around them. Properly designed and erected, they will work. Remember to stock the shelter with enough food and especially water to last from a few days to a few weeks. More probably a week or less.
Potassium Iodide is an over the counter medication which if taken according to directions, will help ward of negative effects of radiation on certain areas of our bodies, ie the thyroid. It is especially important of children to receive this treatment as ill effects of radiation is long-term.
Radiation Free Air is important. If you are in an area where fallout is occurring, the radiation will pass though buildings etc., which is why you need a However, if the air you breath is full of radioactive dust blowing in from the outside, well, you now have a radioactive shelter and well as radioactive lung tissue. Find out what measures you need to take to prevent radioactive airborne debris from getting into the air you are breathing. Once it is in your lungs, it stays there, functioning as a slow cooker.
Radio-Active Fallout Cloud is a massive amount of debris and dust which was blown into the high attitudes during the explosion. Air currents at altitude will move the cloud hundreds of miles a day. Understanding air mass movements and how to determine winds aloft is very, very important. Learning how to determine wind direction relevant to your location and that of the detonation, will allow you to determine whether or not the fallout cloud is heading your way, as well as it's expected ETA. You may have mere minutes to make your decision to stay [in your shelter] or go north, south, east or west away from the path of the dangerous radioactivity. Remember, Martial Law and road blocks will no doubt occur very rapidly, so you will have little time to sit and worry. React or risk the health or lives of yourself and your loved ones.
There is only so much we can cover in a brief overview. There is a ton of info available - just do-it!
