Preparedness Manual - Chapter 7
Preparing For The Unthinkable

Subchapter Title
Being Prepared Is Your Best Defense

Know Thy Enemy
Enemy in the context of this publication is not necessarily a live terrorist or the notion of terrorism. An enemy is lurking in the bowels of each chapter of this publication. For example, in chapter one, we discuss at length a number of economic issues. Any one of which could bring down the house of cards. If the preponderance of trends, conjecture and professional opinion strongly suggests that the stock market is going to take a terrible beating within a projected period of time, wouldn't you view the market as an enemy of your financial welfare???? Therefore, studying and keeping abreast of rapidly changing events and conditions is essential, if you are wanting to know your enemies. That is precisely why this publication was written. To help folks know their enemies.

Enduring terrorist attacks becomes increasingly difficult, as a persons level of knowledge and awareness decreases. Every military tactician will tell you;
"Know Thy Enemy". In a broader sense, it is a truism in business, sports, diplomacy, politics, and just about every aspect of life. With regard to "knowing our enemy", the media is failing in it's role as a source of candid and unbiased information. They have as usual a ravenous appetite for ratings. Rather than spending adequate time on educating you and I on the topic as well as the real dangers of terrorism, they choose to get in our face 24/7 with such things as Anthrax. Not that Anthrax is a minor issue. It is simply the disproportionate time they spend hyping Anthrax for the sake of ratings. As I see it, the media has nearly single handedly initiated wide spread hysteria. It has nearly paralyzed our postal system, on a national level as well as in corporate mail rooms. They conspicuously forget to remind us that about 50,000 people die on the roads each year and another to the common flu. Perhaps I am being a bit naive, or far worse, "insensitive". I heard one reporter claim: "Our people can't take the truth". Maybe he was right, and the media is afraid of telling us the true magnitude of the conflict we have been thrust into. Perhaps I shall make a critical error by trying to tell you about, what I believe to be life and death issues. I trust not, for it is the raw magnitude of the issues, that will help you prepare to survive and endure the trials to come. I won't give you infinite details on each topic, just a no nonsense vision and opinion.

As I see it, there are three main issues involving "terrorist attacks":

  • The objectives of terrorism
  • The weaponry of terrorists
  • The targets of terrorism

I have written extensively in this chapter on these topics, so I won't bore you here with redundancy.

Prepare To Endure
Everyone remembers exactly where they were, in those moments in time when history was in the making. For example, I recall exactly where I was the moment I learned that John F. Kennedy had been shot. In the same fashion I remember where I stood when Martin Luther King left us. September 11th. 2001, the day America lost a way of life, has been added to my moments in time.

That day in disbelief an entire nation stood with mouths open, their eyes being fixated on the horrid, despicable scenes on their TV's. History was not only made that day, but a change in our culture occurred, a paradigm shift began. That day a need arose.

This website is designed to help fill that need. To assist individuals who wish to broaden their awareness, in their proactive posture, as this paradigm shift evolves. It is a work in progress. We suggest you book mark this site and return often as events unfold and as these pages are updated.

As in any calamity or crisis, those who are prepared are better able to endure. We shall use the term preparedness often, for without preparedness we become mere pawns, as the war on terrorism is waged in the near as well as long term. Since preparedness is multifaceted, we shall examine what we believe to be the key aspects. Each key aspect may have several sub-aspects to preparedness:

  • Micro Preparedness or short-term is related to a specific "terrorist-attack"
  • Macro Preparedness or long-term is "war-on-terrorism" related
  • Emotional Preparedness relates to the manner in which we adjust to a long-term war on terrorism and or living with the trials and tribulations other issues discussed in this publication present to us folks.
Hot Topics
  • Nuclear Attack Preparedness relates to the most important things to do in the event a nuclear incident should occur.
  • Biochemical Attack Preparedness relates to the ever increasing danger of a biochemical assault on our homeland, and what you can do NOW to prepare to survive and endure.

Micro "short-term" Terrorist Attack Preparedness:
It seems just last week that we learned the awesome level of hate, which lurks amidst us. By seeking out this website, you've demonstrated initiative in learning survival preparedness in order to protect yourself and your loved ones. For the sake of clarity, "short-term" represents an element of time lasting from a few hours to a few days. It will involve an incident (terrorist attack), which directly involves you and or members of your immediate family. In consideration of time, we present here an article written and made available through the Red Cross. It addresses a list of actions and thoughts for you to consider, relating to short-term incident related preparedness. We will revisit and enhance the short-term preparedness section often in order to enhance its value. To view the Red Cross's article click here.

Short Term Emotional Preparedness:
I shall discuss emotional preparedness more thoroughly in the macro or long-term section. Over the short-term, we're talking about an emotional toughness, readiness. It's manifest in an attitude, a determination to endure terrorist attacks anytime, day or night, at any place, whether it be in your bedroom, your workplace or where you worship. Unless you are prepared emotionally, your chances of enduring long enough to survive, are greatly reduced.
"Ya gotta get tough and resolute!".

Short Term Survival Plans:
We discussed this element of endurance earlier. We do so again because preparing a well thought out short-term emergency plan, is a good indicator. It signals that as individuals we have begun the process of making the mental and emotional adjustment necessary to endure. A short-term plan is much like an insurance policy. We hope we never need to use it, but just knowing we have it, creates confidence and peace of mind. In case you skipped over the earlier link we've placed it here again. Folks, these are dangerous times we live in. You may suddenly and without warning, be thrust into the most dangerous situation of your life. You need to be self-reliant even if only for a few hours, a day or even a week. Everyone should have a short-term survival plan.

Short Term Survival Kit:
In the blink of an eye, you may need to save yourself from the ravages of a terrorist attack. Each adult and student in your family should carry his/her own short-term survival kit. To look over and print a copy of our version of a checklist, visit the micro-kit page.

Macro "long-term" War-On-Terrorism Preparedness
No one has a crystal ball or vision of the long-term paradigm shift we are entering. Some claim the shift is a Transitional Period in the history of mankind here on earth. What ever you choose to name or call it, change is upon us. Only time will record the tale. We can though, establish a reasonable and sensible approach on preparedness. I am not in any way suggesting that you ought to, or should, do everything we review or suggest within this set of pages. Experts agree, it is prudent to have a long-term plan of preparedness. The plan may save your life the lives of your loved ones.

The following represents a brief introduction to a number of elements you should consider in developing your plan. It is not necessarily complete, yet it is comprehensive. Each individual and indeed family has a unique set of circumstances, which require each plan to be refined to meet the needs of it's family unit:

Your Emotional Preparedness:
"The very first challenge in this new paradigm, is for each of us to make a mental adjustment." Accept the changes, which are altering our lives and choose to adapt in order to ENDURE. Unless each of us is Emotionally Prepared, the chances of surviving independently of others are poor. Visit the section on Emotional Preparedness for a more involved discussion.

Your Water Supply:
Having a sufficient supply of potable water is of course one of your most critical concerns. As human beings we can survive only a few days without water. We are also composed mostly of water, as is 70 percent to of the earth's surface. Fresh usable water can become very scarce on a local level in a time of emergency.

In the event of a terrorist attack or series of terrorist attacks that effect the water supply, you must assume the readily available water in your home as well as nearby is polluted and unusable. Therefore it is foremost of importance to plan to have an adequate supply of drinkable water. The section labeled Water Supply will present a number of very important options and techniques, which you may use to supply yourself and your family with sufficient drinking water, over a prolonged period of time.

Your Food Supply:
Close behind the need for water is the need for food. Though we can live well over a month without food it is essential to have a plan in place to guarantee you have a an adequate to food supply.

Much of our food must be shipped to from hundreds or even thousands of miles away. For our nation's food supply system to function properly, all transportation systems need to be intact. Any disruption of the food delivery system can result in a run on food supply throughout the US and/or local regions causing immediate inventory to be depleted within days. Our current concerns go beyond delivery systems into the realm of contamination. If terrorists succeed in contaminating any portion of our food system, panic could break out causing a run on foods, and the depletion within days.

As you see to ignore your food supply now could result in you becoming a beggar in the streets at some point in time in the future. We have prepared a section labeled Food Supply, which covers the issue adequately.

Your Electricity & Lighting:
If a terrorist attack either locally or on a broader scale, is successful in interrupting our electric power supply, you should have a plan in place, ready to activate provisions for emergency lighting. A darkened home, night after night will become intolerable very fast. Included in your long-term plan must be provisions for lighting. I am not talking about an abundance of light, I'm referring to area lighting and lighting to read. The health of ourselves as well as our family is somewhat dependent on having adequate lighting. We have prepared a comprehensive section called Electricity & Lighting to help you prepare this portion of your plan.

Your Heat & Warmth:
The idea of going without heat, even for an evening can make most people panic. Going without heat day after day, week after week, is just unacceptable. There are a number of options, which can make life tolerable by furnishing sufficient heat to be comfortable. The section titled Staying Warm presents these options.

Your Communications:
Communications in the form of radio, TV, phone system and cellular phone systems may all fail for one reason or another. It is critical to be kept informed about current conditions locally and nationally. Telephone system failure including cellular systems may isolate you from your distant friends and relatives. A section titled Communications has been prepared to help resolve these problems to some degree.

Your Optimum Health Is Vital:
Perhaps more than any other area of preparedness, health issues become quite important. Health needs of each family member need to be addressed individually. Issues such as basic health conditions, ailments and medications become important. Having a strong immune system during the war-on-terrorism, is truly a matter of life and death. The section titled Staying Healthy addresses health related issues.

Your Personal & Family Security:
Depending on the severity of issues confronting the population at large, the issue of safety and security of family members may or may not to be important. However, even if you dislike the idea of guns, you may need a basic defensive weapon. Even if it's purpose is to protect you and your family against crazed animals.

Surviving and living outdoors:
We as a people are so accustomed to sleeping in our own bed, that to many the idea of suddenly being without our own comfort is just unimaginable. In reality, there are a number of what-ifs, that could make it a very sudden reality. Here is an overview of supplies and gear you may need. Here are a few situations which could suddenly make you a survivalist:

  • By biochemical contamination of your home, (Anthrax)
  • By fire, (from carelessly heating your home)
  • By nuclear contamination of your entire area, (from a bomb and/or attack on a nuclear facility)
  • By being marooned away from home, (bridges out)

Maintaining your purchasing power:
There are a number of events, any one of which could effectively interfere with the banking system in the US. What if suddenly, you turned on the TV or radio and the commentator was describing the unveiling of a sever attack against our monetary system. He/she reports rumors of the fed's closing all banking institutions, in order to prevent a catastrophic run on the banks, along with wide spread cashing in on bonds, etc. etc.. Your mind fixes on the word, "check book", then "credit cards". Your hand involuntarily reaches into your pocket, where it retrieves a mere $47.45 in cash. Ugh, you're in deep "doo-doo". Get the picture? You need a supply of cash, both paper and coins available. Enough for say six weeks of purchasing power for food, gas and the other necessities of life. Now make sure you don't misunderstand me!!!! I'm not telling you to cash out all your institutional assets. I'm only telling you, it is prudent to have some cash on hand. It should be very securely hidden away.
