Preparedness Manual - Chapter 7 Preparing For The Unthinkable
Subchapter Title "Macro" Long Term Preparedness
No one has a crystal ball or vision of the long-term paradigm shift we are entering. Some claim the shift is a Transitional Period in the history of mankind here on earth. What ever you choose to name or call it, change is upon us. Only time will record the tale. We can though, establish a reasonable and sensible approach on preparedness. I am not in any way suggesting that you ought to, or should, do everything we review or suggest within this set of pages. Experts agree, it is prudent to have a long-term plan of preparedness. The plan may save your life the lives of your loved ones.
The following represents a brief introduction to a number of elements you should consider in developing your plan. It is not necessarily complete, yet it is comprehensive. Each individual and indeed family has a unique set of circumstances, which require each plan to be refined to meet the needs of it's family unit:
Your Emotional Preparedness:
"The very first challenge in this new paradigm, is for each of us to make a mental adjustment." Accept the changes, which are altering our lives and choose to adapt in order to ENDURE. Unless each of us is Emotionally Prepared, the chances of surviving independently of others are poor. Visit the section on Emotional Preparedness for a more involved discussion.
Your Water Supply:
Having a sufficient supply of potable water is of course one of your most critical concerns. As human beings we can survive only a few days without water. We are also composed mostly of water, as is 70 percent to of the earth's surface. Fresh usable water can become very scarce on a local level in a time of emergency.
In the event of a terrorist attack or series of terrorist attacks that effect the water supply, you must assume the readily available water in your home as well as nearby is polluted and unusable. Therefore it is foremost of importance to plan to have an adequate supply of drinkable water. The section labeled Water Supply will present a number of very important options and techniques, which you may use to supply yourself and your family with sufficient drinking water, over a prolonged period of time.
Your Food Supply:
Close behind the need for water is the need for food. Though we can live well over a month without food it is essential to have a plan in place to guarantee you have a an adequate to food supply.
Much of our food must be shipped to from hundreds or even thousands of miles away. For our nation's food supply system to function properly, all transportation systems need to be intact. Any disruption of the food delivery system can result in a run on food supply throughout the US and/or local regions causing immediate inventory to be depleted within days. Our current concerns go beyond delivery systems into the realm of contamination. If terrorists succeed in contaminating any portion of our food system, panic could break out causing a run on foods, and the depletion within days.
As you see to ignore your food supply now could result in you becoming a beggar in the streets at some point in time in the future. We have prepared a section labeled Food Supply, which covers the issue adequately.
Your Electricity & Lighting:
If a terrorist attack either locally or on a broader scale, is successful in interrupting our electric power supply, you should have a plan in place, ready to activate provisions for emergency lighting. A darkened home, night after night will become intolerable very fast. Included in your long-term plan must be provisions for lighting. I am not talking about an abundance of light, I'm referring to area lighting and lighting to read. The health of ourselves as well as our family is somewhat dependent on having adequate lighting. We have prepared a comprehensive section called Electricity & Lighting to help you prepare this portion of your plan.
Your Heat & Warmth:
The idea of going without heat, even for an evening can make most people panic. Going without heat day after day, week after week, is just unacceptable. There are a number of options, which can make life tolerable by furnishing sufficient heat to be comfortable. The section titled Staying Warm presents these options.
Your Communications:
Communications in the form of radio, TV, phone system and cellular phone systems may all fail for one reason or another. It is critical to be kept informed about current conditions locally and nationally. Telephone system failure including cellular systems may isolate you from your distant friends and relatives. A section titled Communications has been prepared to help resolve these problems to some degree.
Your Optimum Health Is Vital:
Perhaps more than any other area of preparedness, health issues become quite important. Health needs of each family member need to be addressed individually. Issues such as basic health conditions, ailments and medications become important. Having a strong immune system during the war-on-terrorism, is truly a matter of life and death. The section titled Staying Healthy addresses health related issues.
Your Personal & Family Security:
Depending on the severity of issues confronting the population at large, the issue of safety and security of family members may or may not to be important. However, even if you dislike the idea of guns, you may need a basic defensive weapon. Even if it's purpose is to protect you and your family against crazed animals.
Surviving and living outdoors:
We as a people are so accustomed to sleeping in our own bed, that to many the idea of suddenly being without our own comfort is just unimaginable. In reality, there are a number of what-ifs, that could make it a very sudden reality. Here is an overview of supplies and gear you may need. Here are a few situations which could suddenly make you a survivalist:
- By biochemical contamination of your home, (Anthrax)
- By fire, (from carelessly heating your home)
- By nuclear contamination of your entire area, (from a bomb and/or attack on a nuclear facility)
- By being marooned away from home, (bridges out)(running out of gas)(weather shuts you down)
- By rapid climate change weather destroying your home
- Circumstances require you to flee for safety, far away and: (bridges out)(running out of gas)(weather shuts you down)
Maintaining your purchasing power:
There are a number of events, any one of which could effectively interfere with the banking system in the US. What if suddenly, you turned on the TV or radio and the commentator was describing the unveiling of a sever attack against our monetary system. He/she reports rumors of the fed's closing all banking institutions, in order to prevent a catastrophic run on the banks, along with wide spread cashing in on bonds, etc. etc.. Your mind fixes on the word, "check book", then "credit cards". Your hand involuntarily reaches into your pocket, where it retrieves a mere $47.45 in cash. Ugh, you're in deep "doo-doo". Get the picture? You need a supply of cash, both paper and coins available. Enough for say six weeks of purchasing power for food, gas and the other necessities of life. Now make sure you don't misunderstand me!!!! I'm not telling you to cash out all your institutional assets. I'm only telling you, it is prudent to have some cash on hand. It should be very securely hidden away.
