Preparedness Manual - Chapter 7
Preparing For The Unthinkable

Subchapter Title
Preparing For A Biochemical Attack

The age of biological & chemical warfare has arrived. Although biological vs. chemical agents are used in a similar manner, they are quite different.

Bio-weapons "biological weapons" are living organisms. Bio-weapons are designed to attack specific targets, such as humans. They are most effective when used covertly. That is, they are introduced without their target knowing. They do their initial damage before symptoms occur. Frequently, as in the case of inhaled Anthrax, by the time overt symptoms occur; it is too late for effective treatment. Biological weapons require an incubation period, where symptoms often do not occur for days after the initial attack.

Chemical weapons are not living organisms. They are prepared and introduced to the enemy in the form of gas, dust or liquid. Typically, they are "broad-band agents". Broad Band Agents kill every living thing. Some can be altered to kill specific targets such as humans only. Chemical weapons act very quickly and can kill and or disable the target in minutes. They are more apt to be used in a battlefield setting, rather than against a local population as in a terrorist setting.

Most major nations, including the Arab nations have an ability to deploy both chemical and biological weapons against their enemies. As evidenced by the recent outbreak of Anthrax in the US, sooner or later most weaponry is used against an enemy. Since terrorists are believed to have access to other biological and chemical weapons, the likelihood of additional attacks, with even greater danger, cannot be ruled out. Preparedness is the call to action.

Many experts agree, people living in major urban areas need to be concerned primarily with biological terrorist attacks. The presence of Anthrax and other known biological weapons is bad enough, but no one knows what germ-warfare scientists have been cooking up in their labs. Intelligence has indicated that Russia had for years been conducting research on new and more deadly agents. No one can forecast what dreadful concoction might fall into the hands of terrorists wherever they might be.

Biological weapons can produce a casualty count similar if not greater than a nuclear attack. Comparing biological to chemical weapons, a few grams of anthrax spores would cause the same devastation as a ton of nerve gas.

Till recently, biological agents could render an entire region uninhabitable for generations. Some experts believe agents exist today that can kill a population, and after a predetermined time frame, the agents die-off. The enemy merely would wait a while, then walk right in and take over.

Unfortunately, it is unlikely that our local, county, state and/or federal governments, can protect large numbers of our population. We are on our own, and that is precisely why this website is being written.

What are the biological weapons?

Bacteria are single-celled organisms. Bacteria are all around us; our bodies are loaded with it. When the agent is helpful to humans, it is called a friendly bacterium. However, our friends the terrorists are not interested in friendly bacteria. They are interested in unfriendly and often deadly bacteria such as E.coli. Bacteria can be easily grown in a laboratory, and its spores can be stored for long periods of time. They include Anthrax, Brucellosis, Black plague, Cholera, Diptheria, Glanders, Paratyphoid fever, Pulmonary Tuberculosis, Typhoid fever, to name a few. These are the agents we know about, they may be dozens of deadly agents, which were developed by the Russians, which we have no information on.

Fungi are parasitic plants and are spread by spores. Unfortunately, for many there is no known treatment. For example, Coccidioidomycosis known as "San Joaquin or Valley Feve" is highly infectious. Histoplasmosis is deadly fungal infection.

Rickettsiae are parasitic microorganisms which often attack both animals and humans. They are easily spread by carrier insects such as: chiggers, fleas, ticks, mites and others. Agent's known to have been prepared for biological warfare: Q fever, typhus, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Viruses attack by entering living cells, where they replicate and spread throughout the host organism. Some are known to alter the genetic structure of the host cell, in order to facilitate it's own reproduction. Viruses are much like a work-in-progress, for they are constantly changing (mutating), which makes it nearly impossible to prepare a vaccine. By the time a vaccine is developed the virus is a different agent causing a new disease. Antibiotics are also ineffective in fighting viruses. To make matters worse, viruses are simple structures, which can be easily altered in a laboratory. There are thousands of qualified biochemists around the world more than capable of synthesizing a virus into a more destructive weapon.

Zoonoses are diseases originating in animals, but which can be transmitted to humans. Unfortunately, without immunity humans often die of these diseases, even with medical treatment. There are some vaccines available for people working closely with animals. Included in the list of Zoonoses are: Anthrax, Glanders, Rinder-pest virus, Hog cholera virus or swine fever.

How are biological agents introduced into a population?

By aerosol equipment: Agents produced as a fine powder or liquid in a suspension, can be adapted to aerosol spraying equipment. The equipment is usually attached to any number of aircraft. The particulate once leaving the nozzle, falls at very slow rate of about 4 to 6 feet an hour. Sunlight kills the agent, so terrorists would choose the nighttime to attack.

By Vectors (insect carriers): Large numbers of insects such as mosquitoes can be infected, and then released into the environment to do their dirty work. Since many insects live for weeks (insects live 8 weeks), whereas, aerosol agents only live a few hours. Fleas can live for seven months, all the time spreading their death throughout the population. Some experts claim their are nearly a hundred such viral diseases, which can infect humans in this fashion.

By suicidal terrorists: A terrorist bent on committing suicide for the cause, can do great harm, by tossing spores from a tall building, or by driving a van from town to town, all the while venting spores out a rear vent into the environment. It is not a matter of how they can, it's a matter of when they plan to. That is why we are rounding-up as many suspects as we can. Because they have already demonstrated their willingness to die, while committing a heinous act.

What Can You Do To Protect Yourself?

Gas masks and protective clothing: If caught in the immediate area in which a biological attack is occurring, a gas mask and a protective suit is your first line of defense. Yes, it is often impossible to know an attack underway. But, suppose there is warning, do you want to be left without protection? There are a number of life saving issues you ought to know about, before ordering a gas mask from any source. I suggest you do a google search for "gas masks", in order to learn about the critical issues, such as "age of mask", "expiration dates for cartridges", "how many replacement cartridges to order", "how to find an honest supplier" etc..

Getting clear of the area is your second line of defense. If possible get out of the infected area a quickly as possible. Never go down-wind, for the agents will be going in that direction as well.

Seal off your environment is also a line of defense. If you can't leave, seal off the area you will occupy as best you can. Close all windows, and tape up all cracks and air inlets.

The agents are usually heavier than air. Go to the high ground, never go to a low area in a valley or river basin. If you are in a city, try to get to an upper floor of a building before sealing it off. Lower floors and city streets will have a concentration of the deadly agent as it settles.

Urban areas are at most risk, while rural areas have less risk. This is a factor of the population. Terrorists will prefer to attack larger populated areas.

Survival tactics may be necessary. If a large-scale biochemical attack is as successful as the World Trade Center attack, a large area of the country could be in serious trouble for a very long time. Individuals and families will have to fend for themselves. That's pretty much the theme of this entire website; to alert our people on the need to prepare and be self-sufficient.

What might happen:

  • All the issues discussed elsewhere about food and water
  • Water and food may be scarce and armed outsiders may roam the countryside stealing what they need.
  • Wild animals, sick and starving may attack you in your back yard.
  • Neighbors may spy on neighbors to see what can be stolen.
  • The low-lifes in the family may show up expecting you to share your survival rations
What should you do now?
  • Learn as much as you can as quickly as you can
  • Develop a plan to endure and survive
  • Initialize the plan
  • Keep things very very quiet. Don't tell anyone, not a neighbor, not a friend and not even a relative. Even your kids should not know. They will tell every one of their friends. People will come a visiting late at night. Only adults in your Immediate Survival Group should be aware of our plan. Your Immediate Survival Group will include adults (plus kids and pets) whom you will plan on providing water and provisions to.
  • Be prepared to defend yourself and your survival station. If you do not like guns, too bad. You better learn to like them quickly. Because the folks who may come visiting won't be handing you a cake, when they knock on your door.
