Preparedness Manual Chapter VI Our Earth's Violent Past
First a note: This Preparedness Manual chapter in addition to identifying Risk and Solutions, presents a brief overview of the full text found in the full length MMC book. A link to the full ebook is found on the right side of the home page. Due to extremely dynamic conditions which morph daily, updates captioned as 2007 were discontinued in 2008. They were replaced with a subscriber based weekly "MMC's Risk Assessment Report", click here for details.
In this chapter on Our Earth's Violent Past, we discuss several issues: rapid climate change; global warming; floods; abrupt changes in plate tectonics; violent earth quakes; violent volcanos; super volcanos “calderas”; solar flares and radiation; asteroid and comet impacts and near-misses, and much more.
The empirical evidence and data on each subchapter is very extensive. Distilling it down to a digestible level was a real challenge. As you may already be aware, certain topics are laden with controversy. The outcome of the effort to write this chapter made the effort very worthwhile. I trust you will agree.
Rapid Climate Change
It is hard to imagine a person alive today in the USA, who has not heard the term "global warming". There have been hordes of groups from Greenpeace to legislative hearings, who have loudly voiced their concern. It's been all over the media like fly stuff. Yet, those in power around the globe and especially here in the US, had turned a deaf-ear on the subject, until this year. In 2005 due in-part to the severity of weather conditions around the globe, many who would not consider the topic are now at least giving lip service. In the context of this sub-chapter I examine the topic of global warming under a broader condition of rapid climate change. I vividly layout and explain the consequences of global warming, as it has the capacity of inducing several very undesirable climate changes, each of which can be devastating to specific geographic areas.
Rapid climate change is in reality a catch-all phrase, which includes many variables. More definitively, rapid climate change can mean warmer and wetter, warmer and drier, colder and snowier, or colder and drier. Each of the aforementioned variables can represent conditions in various regions around the globe. In fact, global warming is the fuel of rapid climate change and is thought to be able to create the above changes all simultaneously, in separate geographic areas around the globe.
Update 2007
The Atlantic Gulf Stream which is a conveyor process causing warm equatorial water to flow northward toward Arctic circle, subsequently mixing with colder northern water, thus becoming denser and diving downward and changing direction southward. Thus an ocean water conveyor system is maintained.
The northern current brings along warm moist air currents which continue on to the European continent. Some of the milder water continues onward and mixes with the waters off northern Europe. The combination of warm moist air a warmish ocean waters governs the climate of the northern latitudes of Europe. Without the warm air, and warmish waters the northern European area would experience an ice age climate.
Over the past several years movement of the GS showed signs of slowing. During early 2007, the GS appeared to stop momentarily. If the tendency continues and increases in frequency, a full stoppage could occur and would be catastrophic to the British Isles and beyond. Since global warming has been accepted as a reality, we can expect increased air temperatures over the Arctic region, thus increasing the melting of ice caps. Scientists indicate the melting of Arctic ice creates massive amounts of cold fresh water [no salt] to enter the ocean and diluting the warm salty surface water of the GS, making it less saline. Being less saline, the water loses some of it's tendency to become denser as it cools and consequently loses it ability to dive to deeper waters. The conveyor would then be negatively effected and could be caused to stop if the condition reaches as they say a "critical mass".
Danger From Solar Activities
Our sun is by far the most important celestial object in our solar system. If you place a bee-bee on a table and then place a basketball next to it, you have some relative comparison in size, between our sun and our earth [we're the bee-bee]. Another way to compare is to consider that 1.3 million earths could fit inside our sun. Actually the sun represents about 98% of the total mass in our solar system.
Our Sun, perhaps like all suns is subject to regular and predictable cycles in it's sun spot activity [solar activity]. From an observational point of view, man has a mere few hundred years of observational data to refer to regarding our sun's solar activity. Examining our sun's past is by and large a scientific speculation. We have very little long term empirical evidence to document and analyze.
There is growing evidence that our sun, having already concluded it's recent cycle of heavy solar activity, rather than becoming quieter and quieter, is becoming more and more active. As an example. In November, 2003, our sun was well into it's quieting down cycle. It was behaving as expected. Suddenly things started to go a bit nuts on the sun. There is a thorough review of this record breaking activity in the full chapter. Here is a teaser. It could have destroyed every computer in large regions of the earth. Whew, but it missed us!
There is evidence in the fossil and geological records, of what appear to be massive amounts of solar radiation striking the earth with a catastrophic effect. The records strongly suggest, that these massive solar bursts caused massive extinctions here on earth. In today's world, dependent of a myriad of electrical and electronic devises, a direct hit by a massive blast of solar radiation, would be catastrophic indeed. Not only are we talking about massive casualties, but all the electronic and electrical equipment worldwide is at serious risk of being cooked, fried or what-ever, destroyed.
Reports indicate that the direction of the above mentioned solar outburst provided earth with a glancing blow. Major Ed Dames of TheKillShot.com referred to it as a "shot-over-the-bow". He went on to say it was a harbinger of things to come. Dames indicated that if the full force of the solar radiation had hit earth head-on, the destruction would have been tremendous. Large segments of our electric power grid would have been destroyed, and many of our satellites in orbit would have been fried.
Update 2007
Increase in solar storm activity peaking about 2011. This increase will include potential catastrophic CME [Coronal Mass Ejections] of solar energy, beginning as early as 2007. CME's range in class with X class being the upper scale presently. CME's create EMP's [Electro Magnetic Pulses] when the blast into the earth's outer atmosphere. EMP's are the actual critters that causes destruction and damage. they are very high voltage and low amperage blasts of energy. When they cascade through the atmosphere, any electrical or electronic equipment they come in contact can be destroyed as their components are over heated and fail.
A direct hit on earth of a high value X class can over load our atmospheric protection and the EMP blast will cascade through the atmosphere, any electrical or electronic equipment they come in contact can be destroyed as their components are over heated and fail.
CME's can cause massive destruction to the electric grid around the globe. In 1989 a blast knocked out a major portion of the Canadian grid and some portions took weeks to repair in the middle of winter. The positive thing about the 1989 event was it was reasonably confined and there were no other similar events around the globe. If NASA's and NOAA's predictions of the beginning solar cycle are accurate, earth could be in for very hard times. The issues in repairing the grid are simple, man power and equipment. If all available equipment is used up on repairs, OH, well you can figure out the rest. I suggest you study hard the full chapter 7 and decide what preparedness measures you want to take.
Increase in Galactic Energy Waves continuing beyond 2011 with upper limits not forecasted. In recent years scientists with the aid of satellites have been reporting a new phenomena, GRB's, or Gamma Ray Bursts. GRB's are very similar to CME's but are not generated by our sun. They last through the galaxy at very high speed and when they hit an object they cause similar events as CME's. So, everything I have mentioned about CME's is a ditto for GRB's.
Recent findings seem to create a correlation between the impact on earth of large CME's and GRB's. They seems to be creating an impact phenomena of sorta making tectonic plates that were experiencing substantial stress, to suddenly unleash the stress with a earth quake event. For example, the Dec 2004 earthquake which created the tsunami, subsequently killing about 400,000 people, was correlated with a very large GRB which occurred at that time. As usual, governments don't like alarming info to get out, so it appears the are fudging the books as to the size and timing, which was changed from early on reports, btw, reports of CME's and GRB's are usually reported very promptly. This event took two months. You don't suppose they were afraid you and I might figure it out would ya? It's clear to many scientists that the GRB seemed to set off the earthquake. Buuut shishhhh - don't tell anyone. OK, in summary, latest theory seems to indicate that large CME and GRB's can set of earth quakes in regions which were experiencing severe forces. Now, do you recall I have mentioned that forecasts indicate severe solar activity from now till 2011ish. GRB's can't be forecast. We don't know when one will arrive unexpected.
Guess what, scientists are putting together an additional theory about CME's and the sun etc.. Within the past year there seems to more scientists who are agreeing that solar activity does effect weather conditions here on earth. So, with big solar activity forecast, I guess it is safe to say, we're in for lots of really bad weather in the coming years.
Danger From Celestial Bodies
Asteroids have been creating craters around the globe for billions of years. Unlike our moon, in which the craters are very visible even to the naked eye, here on earth they disappear due to corrosion, plant life, floods etc., Perhaps the most famous of all direct hits, is noted to have caused mass extinction of almost all life on earth including the dinosaurs. Approximately 65 million years ago and asteroid made a direct hit with earth near the Yucatán peninsula just off Mexico. Scientists claim it caused the mass extinctions of the dinosaurs and over 70% of all life on Earth.
In recent years much is being discussed about cyclical visits to earth from celestial visitors. Evidence seems to be abundant, for example: Ancient legends all over the earth all mention celestial impacts of massive destruction. The geological records provide data. Psychics and prophets all claim to see very similar celestial events. All religions project a coming event in earths history of a celestial calamity. Major governments from around the earth are quietly scanning the southern hemisphere, looking for the first signs.
Update 2007
Please note, much of the following info is just recently began to surface. Entire books are being written about the topics. I am taking liberty to crunch the info down into digestible chunks. Sorry.
Oh, as some measure of evidence that what will be written here is not whooo whooo stuff I'll let you in on a little secrete, well maybe not a secrete, but the gov has cloaked it in very little public awareness. The US has designed, built and is in the final stages of completing an horrifically expensive and very special celestial telescope right near the south pole. It's sole function is [unless we've been lied to again] to look for xray images in the southern sky's. All the following info is relative to incoming stuff from the southern region of the sky. I guess they expect strangers for dinner.
In addition to the GRB's just discussed, our galaxy offers up additional little goodies for us to ponder. It takes about 25,000 years for our solar system to traverse a circuit though our galaxy. Twice in the period our solar system passes through a region referred to as the Galactic Plane, sorta once going and once coming. The Galactic Plane is laden with cosmic debris and additional energies emitting from the galactic core.
These energies seem to be of multiple types, one of which is the GRB which we have spoken about. The debris is the problem I want to address in this section. The debris creates two types of problems - dangers.
First, the sun does not like debris. If too much debris collides with it, it tends to become more unstable. Well, were entering - scientists think - the area with the greatest debris during the next 3-5 years. So, expect the sun to get even more agitated than NOAA and NASA have already very clearly warned the public about. I'll bet their unprecedented level of alert is their way of telling us about what you presently reading about, but without clarity.
Secondly, the sun is not the only celestial object that is traversing the debris field. All the planets including Earth is as well. Some researchers are forecasting potential destructive meteor, asteroid and comet strikes during the passage over the next 3-5 years.
Let's stop and note, that the sciences of examining our ancient past have uncovered a huge amount of evidence that 12,500ish years ago the earth was severely wounded by events perhaps the same events I just told you about - or at least a portion, enough to get you thinking and prepping I hope.
Danger From earthquakes and volcanoes
Volcanoes and earthquakes are as natural as water and almost as plentiful. Every day thousands of earthquakes take place around the globe. Fortunately for man the massive and destructive quakes occur very infrequently. The continents or land masses around the globe are constantly moving at a very very slow rate. The field of study is referred to as Plate Tectonics. Buuuut, when two massive plates are colliding all day every day, sooner or later they have to release a pent-up massive amount of energy. When these events occur, bad things happen. A vivid example is the massive tectonic plate shift, which manifested itself as a horrendous earthquake followed by tsunami in Indonesia on December 26, 2004. We will never know the true death toll as it is, should I say being - contrived. No need to really scare the masses, ya know what I mean? As in most topics in this chapter, earthquake and volcano activity can occur at random, yet, science is just getting a handle on the models, which are cyclical. Some areas of tectonic activity have a major burst of energy every few hundred years while others are much longer.
There is growing alarm among geologists that certain fault lines or earthquake prone regions are over due for a slammer. A major quake in a wrong location can bring an entire economy to it's knees. Sorry, I didn't mean to put economy before human lives. The end result could be horrific to a wide area of human activities.
Volcanoes seem to come and go without much commotion, as they seldom cause really earth shuddering events. Ah, that may be true, but the geologic record proves volcanoes large and small occur very often in geological time. They also erupt in long predictable cycles. Some erupt every few years, others every few hundred years, some every few thousand. But the really bad guys erupt every few hundred thousand years. In my full chapter, I examine these Super Volcanos in depth. One of these really bad boys has the capacity of creating a nuclear winter just as devastating as a major asteroid impact. There are records of them killing everything within a thousand mile radius and with major devastation in a much larger radius. For example, how about depositing ash 7 feet thick over 1500 miles away? There is one such location, which appears to be 40,000 years past due. The good news is it takes a very long time to build up the massive pressures between eruptions. As the pressure builds to critical levels, seismic and subterranean activity begins. In recent years activity has been continuously increasing under the subject location. Learn all about these massive “calderas” in the full chapter.
Update 2007
Two of the things that are recorded very accurately, if you know where to look, is volcanoes and earthquakes. Both activities have been increasing since the 1940s and clearly show a slow acceleration. So once again, an increase in frequency is occurring in a vital area of concern.
- Earthquakes cause damage and can cause tsunami as evidenced in 2004.
- Earthquakes of over 8.5 are becoming less rare.
- Earthquakes over 9.0 can be catastrophic is a city is at the epicenter.
Volcanoes can explode with such force that they can create what is called a Nuclear Winter. A NW is a condition where so much volcanic dust and ash is blown into the upper atmosphere, that it eventually covers the entire globe. The sun is literally blocked. It's life generating rays do not reach the earth, which leads to plummeting temperatures, massive starvation and total loss of crops. This type of explosion is not uncommon. In the 1800's a volcano in the south Pacific blew and witnesses saw the glare in the sky 200 miles away. Soon the dust spread around the globe and in New England, they had snow in July. It was called the year without a summer. That eruption was large but much larger eruptions have occurred in mans near term past.
Massive volcanoes called Super volcanoes are more rare. The closest to the US is in the US and is inside Yellow Stone Park. It blew some 500,000 plus years ago is over due at this time.
Here is an excerpt from the full version of MMC:
The impact of a Yellowstone eruption is terrifying to comprehend." says Professor McGuire. "Magma would be flung 50 kilometers into the atmosphere. Within a thousand kilometers virtually all life would be killed by falling ash, lava flows and the sheer explosive force of the eruption. One thousand cubic kilometers of lava would pour out of the volcano, enough to coat the whole of the USA with a layer 5 inches thick. The explosion would be the loudest noise heard by man for 75,000 years."
